The Rescue - Avalanche Education Series #3
Our 3rd event in the Avalanche Education Series focuses on the full spectrum of backcountry safety – from physical prep and red-flag checklists to emergency communications and real-world search and rescue operations.
A safe backcountry tour starts long before you step into your bindings – so how do you prepare for physical demands, recognize early warning signs, and respond effectively if an incident occurs?
– Ian Anderson (Co-Owner, PT Revolution) kicks off the evening with a “prep-to-recovery” breakdown. Ian will cover how and why injuries happen in backcountry terrain, how to manage physical exertion on tour, and how to recover – both from a daily tour and from longer-term backcountry injuries.
– Connor Chilcott (Valhalla Mountain Guides, IFMGA Mountain Guide) dives into local preparation checklists, red flags, and avoidable situations. Connor will break down local weather and terrain hazards, key warning signs on the snowpack, and how to spot danger before stepping into high-risk zones.
– Jamie Morgan (Tahoe Backcountry Radio, Ski Patrol & Avy Instructor Candidate) presents on the latest in backcountry communication and safety technology. Jamie will introduce the expanding Tahoe Backcountry Radio program, trailhead outreach initiatives, and how emergency communications tie directly into field safety and rescue readiness.
– Sarah Krammen (President, Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue) ties the entire evening together with fresh stories and insights into how SAR operations unfold once the call goes out. Sarah will share what happens behind the scenes when local rescue teams mobilize and how smart preparation dramatically improves field outcomes.
Doors open at 6:00 PM – come early to grab a beer, check out the sponsor booths for stickers, brochures, and info, and find a seat before the formal presentation begins at 6:30 PM!
